Self-Organization of a Lexicon in a Structured Society of Agents

چکیده

The naming game is a formal mechanism that describes the development of a lexicon in a society of culturally interacting agents. We will here use a cellular automaton version of this game to study the innuence of an extra-linguistic structure over the evolution of the lexicon, but also the innuence of language over this a priori structure. This extra-linguistic structure will be coded by rst giving a location in a 2-D world to agents, and then by allowing them to move in relation to the outcome of the naming games. The results we will present show strong self-organization phenomena, such as the appearance of language and geographical clusters, in addition to the basic properties of the game (high communication success).

Code-Copying in the Balochi Language of Sistan

This empirical study deals with language contact phenomena in Sistan. Code-copying is viewed as a strategy of linguistic behavior when a dominated language acquires new elements in lexicon, phonology, morphology, syntax, pragmatic organization, etc., which can be interpreted as copies of a dominating language. In this framework Persian is regarded as the model code which provides elements for b...

The evolution of a lexicon and meaning in robotic agents through self-organization

This paper discusses interdisciplinary experiments, combining robotics and evolutionary computational linguistics. The goal of the experiments is to investigate if robotic agents can originate a language, in particular a lexicon. In the experiments two robots engage in a series of so-called language games. Starting from the assumption that the robots know how to communicate and are able to dete...

The Development of a Lexicon Based on Behavior

This paper investigates whether a group of agents may develop a common lexicon relating words to situations by a process of self-organization. Each agent independently decides which situations are useful to distinguish , based on its experience with the environment. It then starts to associate signals with each situation. The agents adapt their own associations based on the signals they receive...

Models of EFL Learners’ Vocabulary Development: Spreading Activation vs. Hierarchical Network Model

Semantic network approaches view organization or representation of internal lexicon in the form of either spreading or hierarchical system identified, respectively, as Spreading Activation Model (SAM) and Hi- erarchical Network Model (HNM). However, the validity of either model is amongst the intact issues in the literature which can be studied through basing the instruction compatible wi...
